These guidelines provide teachers, programs, and families a framework for designing developmentally appropriate activities for children from birth to 3 years old. Designed around key learning areas, the standards provide the social, emotional, physical and cognitive skills necessary for positive growth and development. Using the standards to build on what children know and can do, teachers and families share common expectations for continued development. In addition, the standards provide developmentally appropriate suggestions for how best to engage young children in the learning process. The infant and toddler standards are foundational and align with Pennsylvania’s pre-kindergarten standards.
